Team Overcomes Hurdles at Summit Point

The team continued the development of Car 81 over Labor Day weekend in Summit Point, West Virginia. At only a 7 hour tow from Area 81 Racing headquarters, no one on the team had ever visited the track. Tim Pierce and crew worked feverishly to learn the course and resolve issues with the new engine and electronics package. The new Car 81 finished 4th in Race 1 and 5th in Race 2, after briefly moving into 3rd on Sunday.

The “To Do List” after the Watkins Glen race finally began to shrink as the weekend progressed. The team installed a larger radiator on Thursday night, which required verification of cooling over several sessions. The system to tune Air/Fuel ratio was configured and verified. An electronic shifting system was installed after Watkins Glen and not fully tested until the team arrived at Summit. False shifts ultimately became the theme of the weekend and main limiting factor of the car’s performance, as Tim drove very cautiously in order to not damage the engine due to over revving.

Tim Pierce, Driver Car 81 – “The JDR F1000 is a highly developed chassis and three of the previous six have won National Championships, so the car has proven to be capable. JDR and our team recently introduced the 2017 Suzuki GSXR-1000 engine package, electronic shift system, and quick shifter. These were the first ever in F1000 and likely the first in a racecar anywhere. It comes as no surprise that there were issues and we would have to solve them with little outside support. We believe in what we are doing and we know it will be worth the effort. I already have a huge grin every time I pull off the track.”

Special thanks to our Area 81 Racing sponsor Waterfall Security Solutions, lead mechanic Denis Schembri, and designer/manufacturer Jerry Hodges of JDR Motorsports.
