Waterfall/Area 81 Racing’s Tim Pierce posted two more wins over the weekend at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. He had not raced CMP since last spring, but quickly got back on pace during the Saturday qualifying session and earned Pole Position for Race 1. As the race got under way, Car 18 shot out to a large lead and was lapping cars within the first five laps. A disabled car brought out a full course caution on lap 8 with Tim first overall, while the field formed once again behind the pace car. Upon restart, Tim spun in Turn 1 and had to wait for the entire field to pass. At that point the chase was on and he was determined to regain position for the overall win. Within the next five laps, he had climbed his way to second overall and first in class at the checker.
Heavy rain Saturday night left the track cold and wet when the Sunday qualifying began. The team decided to forgo the session and start from the back of the field. On the first lap, Tim quickly took the overall lead and cruised his way to a second win of the weekend.
Tim Pierce, Car 18 – “Unfortunately, I didn’t get enough heat in my tires for the restart on Saturday. I spun going into Turn 1 and was facing oncoming traffic in the middle of the track. If I had another lap or two, there’s no doubt I could have regained the overall lead. I had the guy in my sights but ran out of time. However, it was a great weekend and it’s always nice to bring home two wins. My chief mechanic, Nate Field, and I arrived at the track at noon on Friday, determined to get the clutch issues resolved from VIR. CMP has a lot of tight, low speed turns and we thought using a different wheel/tire combination would increase our grip. That meant we had to reset the ride height, corner weight, and alignment. We set the FB lap record here in 2012 with a lap time of 1:31.38, but had not been anywhere near that in the races since. On Saturday I put down a lap of 1:32.02, so the changes really helped. The car felt phenomenal and I feel like we can beat our record with a few minor adjustments.”
The next stop of the 2016 schedule is the Jim Stark Memorial Double SARRC on April 23-24 at Roebling Road Raceway in Pooler, Georgia.
