Each fall, North America’s best racers converge on one location with Championship aspirations. The SCCA National Championship Runoffs is the pinnacle of amateur road racing and the 2015 edition was held at the historic Daytona International Speedway. With over 600 entries, it is by far the largest race of the year. The 3.56 mile “roval” is a combination of the NASCAR oval and an infield road course with top speeds nearing 170mph. Waterfall/Area 81 Racing’s Tim Pierce qualified by winning the Southeast Championship Series and looked to make some noise on the National scene. The team overcame a laundry list of issues during the four days of qualifying, to bring home a respectable 10th place finish on Saturday.
Tim, who started in the 16th position in his first Runoffs appearance, immediately passed two cars at the green flag and was in 12th place by the end of the first lap. An accident in Turn 1 brought out the black flag and the field was directed to pit lane. Per SCCA rules they were required to restart the race in their original grid positions. Upon restart, he put together clean laps as he sliced through the field. A dramatic last lap put Tim in 11th place with two cars in his sights, but he had no room to pass on the banking. He moved to the wall and it was a sprint to the checker with three cars side-by-side. The photo finish showed only .026 seconds separating the 9th through 11th spots.
Tim Pierce, Car 11 – “Cars were going off left, going off right, and spinning out in the middle of the track. The heat was causing handling issues for everyone and I was fortunate enough to keep it between the lines. I let a few opportunities slip away and that’s unfortunate, but we have a top 10 finish and are bringing the car home in one piece. We accomplished our goal. It’s been a long week and the team was working on the car before 7AM each day. Throughout the week, we had a failed valvestem, clogged fuel injectors, shifting system issues, ride height too low, incorrect alignment, and fuel management issues. It really made it difficult to focus on tuning the setup of the car, but we were finally able to resolve them. I really want to thank Waterfall Security Solutions, Briky, CoolShirt, and Franklin Insurance Agency for their support. I’d also like to thank my crew, Ray Pierce, Chris Pierce, Nate Field, Sid Good, Richard Franklin, Denis Schembri, and Brian Little. None of this would have been possible without them.”
