2013 Season Summary

The Area 81 Racing Team Drivers and Crew Members attended SCCA races at Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen International, New Jersey Motorsports Park, Virginia International Raceway, Carolina Motorsports Park, Roebling Road Raceway, Road America and the Formula 1 Circuit of America’s (COTA) in Austin, TX. The team did quite well competing at some of most challenging Road Racing circuits in the USA.

Richard Franklin and Car # 81 posted solid F1000 results and finishes throughout the season, earning him 2nd place in Southeast Division SCCA National Points (out of 11 cars), 4th place in SCCA Major Eastern Conference Points (out of 22 cars), 5th place in USF1000 – East (out of 23 cars), 7th in National USF1000 Standings (out of 38 cars) plus two Hard Charger Awards. His results earned him an invitation to the prestigious 50th Anniversary SCCA Runoffs at Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI.

Tim Pierce and Car #18 locked in 5 podium finishes, including 2 race Wins, and 3rd overall in points (out of 13 cars) in the South Atlantic Road Racing Championship. He also logged his first SCCA National Win and four 4th place finishes to put him 3rd in total points in Southeast Division SCCA National racing (out of 11 cars). This also earned him an invitation to the SCCA Runoffs. While only competing in 5 of the 13 races in the US Formula 1000 Championship Series, Tim still completed the season in the top half of the Eastern Conference and National standings. He was also the recipient of the Sonoco Hard Charger Award for gaining the most positions in a USF1000 Championship Series race.

The team’s website www.Area81Racing.com has been updated and has received over 14,600 views. With help from our Crew Chief – Hawk Hibbs; the team has a social network of over 100 followers on Area 81 Racing’s Facebook page. In addition, over 6726 viewers have visited the team’s Area 81 Racing YouTube page featuring our exciting in-car videos.

Twice during 2013, Area 81 Race Cars & Drivers were able to make appearances on behalf of their sponsors Waterfall Security Solutions, CITSCORP, The Franklin Agency and Elec/Mech Briky at Wilmington’s Cub Scout Regional Pinewood Derby & Cars & Coffee.

As for upcoming 2014, look for the Area 81 Racing Season Calendar to be published soon. One of the highlights of 2014 will be racing on the high banks of Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The prestigious SARRC Invitational Challenge event will help prepare the team for the 52nd Annual SCCA Runoffs in 2015.
