Waterfall / Area 81 Racing drivers Tim Pierce and Richard Franklin each earned a trip to the podium at the 2012 SCCA Oak Tree Double National Race at Virginia International Raceway. Both drivers were ready for an exciting weekend against a large 40 car field of formula and sports racer drivers, including a former F1000 National Champion. Tim drove a heady race on Saturday Race 1 to finish 3rd under warm & sunny conditions. On Sunday Race 2, Richard claimed his first SCCA National Podium as heavy rain fell for much of the day.
Tim Pierce - "We installed a new WRD limited slip differential on Thursday night, so both qualifying sessions on Friday were spent learning the new handling characteristics. My qualifying times were not what I expected, mainly because I was still getting used to the car and competitors went off on seemingly every turn. However, it paid dividends during on Saturday Race 1, because I could put the power down in places that I had not been able before. On lap 1 I passed several cars, including my teammate Richard on the back straight while he was passing another competitor. At one point we were 3 wide, but I had a good run and went through without incident. The remainder of the race provided me with good experience dealing with traffic.

Both drivers finished with their personal best fastest laps at VIR.
Richard Franklin attended the Friday VIR test day to getting used to the new F1000 car at Area 81’s home track. It was obvious that he is becoming more confident in the braking and handling characteristics as lap times improved after each session. The Stohr ran flawless and the day was largely trouble free except for a Formula Continental spinning and blocking the exit of VIR’s famous Oak Tree Turn.
